Heartworm

Pet Care Services

One area that is important to pet owners is preventative care, which includes annual wellness exams to have an ongoing record of your pet's health. By scheduling a visit with our veterinarian, any problems or potential problems can be diagnosed and addressed in a timely manner.

During a wellness exam at our Spring Hill clinic, our veterinarian will do several things. Your pet's overall condition is checked by examining its ears, mouth, nose, eyes, and skin, taking its temperature, checking its weight, listening to lungs and heart, and checking joints, abdomen, lymph nodes, and mobility.

Included in the thorough exam by our vet, pets receive initial vaccinations or updated vaccinations. Cats also receive testing for feline leukemia. Dogs and cats are tested for heartworm disease, which can affect both. Heartworm is a serious condition requiring heartworm treatment. If left untreated, a heartworm infestation can be fatal.

About Heartworms

A pet diagnosed with heartworm disease needs immediate treatment. Heartworm is not a condition that goes away in time or on its own and requires specialized heartworm treatment. Heartworms are spread to dogs and cats via mosquito bites. The mosquito is a carrier of the heartworm larvae that it has usually acquired after biting an already infected dog or cat. Once the infected mosquito bites another pet, yours, it transfers the worm larvae to the pet, which then travels into your pet's bloodstream.

After pets are infected with heartworms, they are subject to organ damage, lung disease, and heart failure. Some signs of heartworm infection include decreased appetite, mild but persistent cough, weight loss, lack of interest in exercising, and fatigue after any sort of moderate activity.
