Pet Wellness Exams

Why Wellness Exams Are Important

Wellness exams help us detect health problems early when they are often more easily treatable. They also give us a chance to get to know your pet and establish a baseline for their normal vital signs and behavior. This allows us to more quickly identify any changes that may indicate a problem. During a veterinary wellness exam, we will:

  • Check your pet's weight and overall condition
  • Take their temperature
  • Listen to their heart and lungs
  • Examine their eyes, ears, nose, mouth, and skin
  • Feel their lymph nodes and abdomen
  • Assess their joints and mobility
  • Update their vaccines as needed
  • Test for heartworm disease or feline leukemia
  • Talk to you about any concerns you have about your pet's health

Wellness exams are typically done once a year for healthy pets. However, puppies and kittens need more frequent exams during their first year of life and seniors may benefit from semi-annual exams.

What to Expect During Your Pet's Exam

When you arrive at our animal hospital for your pet's exam, you will check in at the front desk and then be taken to an exam room. An experienced vet will greet you and your pet and ask about any concerns you have. We will then perform a comprehensive physical exam. After the physical exam, the veterinarian will discuss her findings with you and make recommendations for any further testing or treatment that may be needed. We will also answer any questions you have about your pet's health.

Preventative Pet Care Is Important

Your pet's preventative care treatments may include vaccinations, microchipping, and dental examinations. The veterinarian may also recommend treatment for fleas, ticks, and heartworm as part of your usual pet care plan. We will also provide recommendations for diet and exercise based on your pet's risk.
